AI for Translation
Best for: European languages; professional-quality translation where accuracy and natural phrasing matter.
DeepL produces noticeably more natural output than Google Translate for most European language pairs — particularly for languages like German, French, Spanish, Polish, and the Scandinavian languages. The free tier covers most casual use. DeepL Pro adds a document translation API and higher limits.
Strong at: nuanced phrasing, maintaining register (formal vs informal), technical documents.
Google Translate
Section titled “Google Translate”Best for: broad language coverage; quick lookups; languages where DeepL has no support.
Google Translate supports 130+ languages — far more than DeepL. Quality for well-resourced language pairs (English–Spanish, English–Chinese) is good. For rare language pairs it’s often the only viable automated option.
Also useful: the camera/image translation feature and real-time conversation mode in the mobile app.
Claude / ChatGPT (for translation)
Section titled “Claude / ChatGPT (for translation)”Best for: translation that requires context, tone preservation, or cultural adaptation.
Large language models aren’t specialised translation tools, but they handle cases that dedicated tools handle poorly:
- Translating idiomatic expressions where a literal rendering doesn’t work
- Adapting content for a different cultural audience (not just translating words but intent)
- Translating within a specific domain with specialised terminology
- Asking “translate this but keep it informal” or “translate this and explain any cultural references”
Use Claude or ChatGPT when you need translation plus judgement, not just word-for-word conversion.
